What is the Life in the UK test?
The Life in the UK test is a computer-based test you must pass to qualify for Indefinite Leave to Remain or British citizenship (ages 18–64). It checks your knowledge of British history, traditions, government, law and everyday life — the material covered in the official handbook, Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents.
How the test works
- 24 multiple-choice questions, drawn from the whole handbook.
- 45 minutes — most people finish in under 20.
- Pass mark 75% — at least 18 correct answers.
- Taken at an official test centre; you must book on GOV.UK at least 3 days ahead and bring the same ID you booked with.
- Costs £50 per attempt — unlimited retakes, but each costs £50. That's why free practice matters.
What should you study?
The official handbook covers five areas, and our practice tests mirror the same mix: British values and principles; what the UK is (nations, geography, symbols); the long history from the Romans to today; the modern, thriving society (culture, sport, religion); and government, law and your role as a citizen.
The government sells the handbook, an app and an e-learning subscription — but the practice itself doesn't need to cost anything. Our mock tests are free, timed like the real thing, and every answer comes with an explanation so wrong answers become learning.
